what’s up with cmt today?

that’s “country music television” for all y’all who aren’t familiar with the TV channel.

they just played the unplugged version of “layla” by eric clapton. now they’re playing “mr. jones” by the counting crows and “constant craving” by k.d. lang. i don’t think that exactly qualifies as country music. it’s almost like the old days, back when they used to play springsteen and bruce cockburn videos and other such things once in a while. i can hear the country element in something like “glory days”, but “secret garden”? not so much.

maybe they figure not a lot of people will be watching the station on a saturday, so they might as well dip into some videos that don’t get any action during the week, just because they can. a few times over the years they’ve played a few things by the be good tanyas.

it’s a nice surprise to come across something like that on what’s normally a country music channel. it’s just a little odd at the same time.

as of right now i have been awake for more than twenty six hours straight. some would look at that as something of an achievement in the elbow-waxing field, but it really ain’t nothin’ compared to some of the other times. you know the ones — those times when we was makin’ intricate sculptures out of straw and yellow grass.

at some point today i realized that i’d been playing “what a fool believes” the wrong way. it’s pretty subtle, but a few changes needed to be made. it’s funny what a difference a few slight alterations can make. move your thumb down one note here and up one note there, and it sounds a hell of a lot better.

i also now have a melodica. it kind of looks like this:

the thing you blow into and play

but mine is blue, and the design is a little different. it’s pretty neat, the way the thing works. you blow into the little mouthpiece at the top and play the keys, and the sound that comes out is a little like a harmonium.

i’m thinking maybe this is what that partially rhythm-less song i talked about a week or two ago needs. it’s worth a try. and so tomorrow, after crashing and shaking off the approaching vampiric state, tried it will be.

and look at that! springsteen’s on CMT right now as i type this. speak of the devil, devil appear. it’s gonna be a long walk home.

  1. a melodica! awesome. a melodica and a drunken friend played a part in my last night in vancouver.
anyway, they’re fun. i hope it serves you and your music well.

and, 26 hours straight? crazy. i hope you sort everything out, if that’s what you’re trying to do.

  2. everything is now sorted out. sleep-wise, at least. it’s weird…i guess i’ve done that going-without-sleep-to-fix-sleep thing so many times now, my body doesn’t react to it as strongly as it used to. i ending up staying awake for about 28 or 29 hours all told, and i’ve stayed up longer than that before, but i didn’t feel as frazzled as in the past. my brain wasn’t the mush that it normally is when i’m that sleep-deprived. which is kind of sad in a way, because i get some interesting weirdness coming out of me in that state. instead of waking up at 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. this morning without being able to get back to sleep, which is what tends to happen when i’m making the transition from “dracula” to “blacula”, the tonsils that were taken from me when i was a child returned to me and sang a song about seahorses. i wept. it was beyond beautiful. it was dutiful.

favourite margaret — next time i see you, i’ll bring the melodica along. it’s too much fun. i’ve been playing parisian-sounding accordion-type stuff, and also “baba o’reilly” by the who. and also that yann tiersen song katie plays on the accordion.

  3. “i ending up”?! even when i was going on no sleep, i didn’t make mistakes like that. yeesh. I ENDING UP IN SPAIN! ME DRINK RED WINE! IT TASTE RED! IT DRINKING ME! I GO’D THERE!

  4. oh god! then come over! thomas needs a melodica song just for him! even though he despises all instrument sounds above a certain pitch. and kate needs some happiness lately too, she is crazed with the last gasp of gr 12…we all need a favourite johnny fix for sure.
