Even walls do a little dancing when no one is looking.

Tomorrow is the big day.

It seems quite a bit of buzz has been gathering around this show over the past little bit. It’s almost as if it’s some big event or something, like an awards show you watch on television while keeping a running tally of how well certain celebrities are aging. Only not like that at all. I’m still not sure what kind of a turnout to expect, but I’m beginning to think there might be a pretty good amount of people there. Even if only eight of you show up, I’ll still play all the Dan Hill songs you can handle. Promise.

My set list of seventy songs has been pared down to about thirty, which seems to be a more reasonable chunk of music for me to perform without killing myself. I started out trying to pack in as much variety as possible while reaching back as far as I could, grabbing songs from all manner of different times and places in my musical life, but it seemed to be getting a little too ambitious. And ambitious insanity is not what this show is about. So, in the end, I decided it was best to just choose songs I thought I would enjoy playing. Hopefully there will still be enough variety to keep things interesting.

Things will lean pretty heavily on material from the last handful of albums, from CHICKEN ANGEL WOMAN forward, but there will be some new and unreleased material thrown in, along with a few choice covers and obscurities. I’ll also try to get to as many of the requests as I can.

You know what I said about having bag sets instead of box sets? I changed my mind. Don’t get me wrong…I like my bags just fine. But I like boxes better, and I happened to find some more of them that will do the job nicely, so I’m sticking with JohnnyBoxes instead of throwing in some JohnnyBags. Only so many of these things can be transported without a natural disaster occurring, and they’re kind of a pain in the posterior to put together, so there will probably only be about half a dozen of them available at the show. I doubt there are many people who would want that much of my music in one shot anyway (as of right now, the “stock” JohnnyBox has fourteen albums in it — eleven full-lengths, two EPs, and one multiple-disc compilation), but I guess you never know. No one has called dibs on any of them, so it’s first come, first served.

As previously mentioned, there will be copies of the last five full-length albums available in standalone/non-box-set form for anyone who doesn’t have them already or anyone who just needs a few extra coasters, and there will be some posters available in case anyone wants one of those. If there’s anyone who plans on trying to slip me some money in exchange for any of this stuff, please don’t do that. I don’t want it, I won’t accept it, and I’d rather not get into an argument with anyone about it. I just want everyone to have a good time. I’m not sure how watching me juggle a bunch of instruments while singing about manatees and forceps translates to people having a good time, but I guess stranger things have happened. If my performance turns out okay, I might have some video of the show to put up here in the next few days.

See you Sunday at 7:00 p.m. — unless you don’t come, in which case I won’t see you. But I’m sure I’ll show up in your dreams to sell you half-eaten apples, and all will be well in the world.

  1. thank you for playing music for my boyfriend and i (and everyone else) tonight! we had a good time and thought you did a very good job 😀 i really love the way you write words, in your songs and on your blog, so it was neat to hear them in real life, too. thank you for the cds (!!!), orange pop and a very nice sunday night : )

  2. Thanks a lot for the kind words, Samantha. I’m glad you had a good time. And you’re quite welcome. Playing live is way, way out of my comfort zone — I feel like a boxer who’s way out of shape or something, going up against some muscle-bound opponent who looks like he’s been carved out of stone. But that was some of the most fun I’ve had playing live in a long time. I wasn’t expecting anything close to that kind of turnout or response. Thank you for being a part of it! I only wish I’d had the chance to chat with more people.

  3. I was going to say that it would be funny if you had everyone stomp along to a song with awkward time changes. Also did you request to have that picture of the queen hung behind you?

  4. I think that’s one of the best compliments anyone’s given me…thanks for being there, Chris. And I didn’t even notice a picture of the Queen, Danny. Was there really? I had nothing to do with that! How strange.

  5. your show was Very impresive i must say.you bring out what music is meant to be. raw and emotional with invisable colors of sound. you painted a picture into the minds of us all. thankyou
