it’s a brand new year. again.

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

About 3 million people visit the Taj Mahal every year. This blog was viewed about 41,000 times in 2010. If it were the Taj Mahal, it would take about 5 days for that many people to see it.

In 2010, there were 104 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 277 posts. There were 1398 pictures uploaded, taking up a total of 29gb. That’s about 4 pictures per day.

The busiest day of the year was June 27th with 530 views. The most popular post that day was songs for stringy-haired lovers..

Where did they come from?

The top referring sites in 2010 were facebook.com, WordPress Dashboard, radio3.cbc.ca, search.aol.com, and search.conduit.com.

that’s part of an email i just got from wordpress. they seriously used that picture of the paddle pop lion, a.k.a. chad kroeger, automatically making this the best automated email ever.

the thing about me uploading almost 1400 pictures has to be wrong (i think all the video and music content got blurred in there somehow), but the rest is true. thus far in the history of the blog, each year my traffic is more than double what it was the year before. i guess it’s true what they say after all — never underestimate the appeal of knee-high purple socks with white stars.

what can you look forward to (or dread) from me in 2011? didn’t i already get into this in december? no matter. things have shifted a bit since then, so i’ll go through it again.

there’s a new album on the way. i was set on calling it bitter bearded balladeer, but then i thought of something i like better without really trying (and, ultimately, i’m not sure the person who came up with bitter bearded balladeer really deserves the satisfaction of seeing it on one of my album covers…though i will still probably end up using it at some point, just because it never fails to crack me up). if all goes according to plan, it should be out there by the end of january. the closest frame of reference seems to be LOVE SONGS FOR NIHILISTS, but only on the superficial level of being a “winter album”. i don’t think i’ve ever made an album quite like this before. and that’s the idea, right? i like where it’s headed so far. after briefly threatening to turn into my reverb-drenched singer-songwriter album, it’s evolved into perhaps one of the most sprawling, schizoid albums i’ve ever made. and i like that.

a companion album should follow before too long, probably by early spring. it will feature some of the catchier, more accessible material that doesn’t quite feel at home on the first one, along with some pretty dark and twisted stuff. after mulling it over a bit, i decided another 2-cd set would be a bit too much work…better to give the music a bit more space and let it carve out two distinct identities for itself.

THE ANGLE OF BEST DISTANCE is something i’ve been talking about finishing for a long time now. i started working on it more than three years ago, and there’s still a lot left to do. it keeps getting pushed into the background when new music comes along…and new music is almost always showing up at my door. even so, i think 2011 could be the year i finally pull all the disparate threads together and finish the thing. time will tell.

you can expect the monthly progress report videos to keep getting more absurd and ambitious. i kind of wish i had started making those things a long time ago…but better late than clever.

i might play live again at some point (and it’s a very hesitant “might”), but if i do it will be (a) very late in the year and (b) probably another one-man show with no supporting act. to be honest, i don’t feel anything pulling me to play in a live setting right now, and if that’s the case there isn’t much point in doing it. of course, that can always change. there might be a papa ghostface reunion at some point as well. i have no idea what to expect from that, but if an album comes out of it, the results could be pretty interesting. maybe it’s the year for creepy improvised spoken word tracks to make a comeback.

whatever happens, expect me to keep posting a whole lot of random stuff here on a pretty regular basis. as van the man said, it’s too late to stop now.
