Cassetteography

Before there was “Johnny West, solo entity” there was The West Team. Armed with little more than a keyboard and a consumer-grade tape recorder, we recorded a lot of music, much of it in the space of just a few years, utilizing just about every brand of cassette tape that existed in the 1990s.

Digitizing all of these tapes, trying to work out the chronology of some of the undated pre-1996 recordings, and scanning all the relevant material (handwritten and typewritten lyrics, album notes, attempted illustrations, and no end of other things) is going to be a massive undertaking, but this music is a profoundly important part of my creative life. Without it, I wouldn’t exist as the artist I am today.

You can expect a ton of pictures, reminiscences, song samples, lyrics, doodles, and odds and ends. It’s going to be a serious work-in-progress for a while, but this should become a pretty fun (and long overdue) archive as it starts to coalesce.
